How to Choose Grip Socks for Pilates

Pilates grip socks on a reformer

Most grip socks look similar in a product photo and feel completely different on a reformer. If you are buying your first pair, or replacing a pair that kept sliding, these are the four things worth checking.

1. Grip coverage matters more than grip material

Almost every brand uses silicone. What separates a pair that holds from a pair that slips is where the silicone sits. Look for grip that runs from the toe pad, along the outside edge of the foot, and across the heel. That is the path your foot actually pushes through in footwork and standing work.

Grip that only covers the ball of the foot looks neat but leaves your heel free to travel on the carriage.

Our soles use small silicone hearts rather than one solid printed slab. Lots of small contact points flex with the foot, so the sole does not feel like a stiff plate when you point your toes.

2. Cuff height changes how the sock stays on

Low ankle socks look good with leggings but they are the first to roll down mid class. A crew height cuff sits above the ankle bone and has enough fabric to hold position. If you have ever spent a class pulling a sock back up, this is usually why.

3. Fabric: thin enough to feel the floor, thick enough to last

Very thin grip socks let you feel every spring and cable, which some people love, but they wear through at the toe fast. Very thick socks feel cushioned and hot and dull your connection to the equipment.

A cotton-dominant blend with a little polyester and spandex sits in the middle. Cotton for breathability, polyester for shape retention through the wash, spandex so the cuff snaps back. Ours are 75% cotton, 20% polyester, 5% spandex.

4. Fit: snug at the arch, not tight at the toes

A grip sock only works if the sole stays flat against your foot. If the sock is loose, the silicone slides against your skin instead of gripping the carriage, and you get that unsettling half second of slip. Check that there is no bunching at the arch when you stand.

A quick note on colour

This part is not technical and we are not going to pretend it is. Plenty of people buy a pair because it matches a set or because a print made them laugh. That is a completely valid reason. Just check the four things above first, then pick whatever you actually want to look down at during a hard series.
